Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Citta Nuova
Urban Architects Group “Città Nuova” was a collective of young professionals formed in Bologna in the early 1960s, led by Giancarlo Mattioli. Rejecting the notion of the architect as a solitary creator, the group embraced collaboration and community engagement in both architecture and urban design. Members included Pierluigi Cervellati, Umberto Maccaferri, Franco Morelli, Gianpaolo Mazzucato, Mario Zaffagnini, and Mattioli himself. In 1965, the group gained international recognition when they won the “Studio Artemide Domus di Milano” competition with their design for the Nesso lamp—an enduring icon of Italian design now housed in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York.
