Richard Sapper
Richard Sapper (1932–2015) was a pioneering industrial designer whose work blended German precision with Italian flair. He began his career at Mercedes-Benz before moving to Milan, where he collaborated with Gio Ponti and later with architect Marco Zanuso, creating iconic products such as the Brionvega radios and the Grillo folding telephone. In 1959, Sapper opened his own studio and soon earned his first Compasso d’Oro for the Static clock. He went on to design enduring classics, including the Tizio lamp for Artemide—an innovative, wire-free halogen desk lamp that remains a global bestseller and a fixture in MoMA’s permanent collection. Celebrated for his sculptural minimalism and technical ingenuity, Sapper received numerous international accolades, including the Compasso d’Oro Lifetime Achievement Award and Germany’s Order of Merit.
