Ernesto Gismondi
Ernesto Gismondi brought a rare combination of scientific rigour and creative vision to the world of lighting design. Born in Sanremo in 1931, Gismondi trained as an aeronautical and missile engineer at Milan Polytechnic — disciplines that would profoundly shape his approach to light.
In the early 1960s, he co-founded Studio Artemide with designer Sergio Mazza, establishing what would become one of the most influential lighting companies in the world. Gismondi's engineering background gave Artemide a distinctive edge: a deep respect for technical precision paired with an unwavering commitment to design excellence.
His creative ambitions extended well beyond the boardroom. As a founding member of Memphis — the radical design movement that redefined Italian aesthetics in the 1980s — Gismondi helped challenge conventions across the entire design industry. Under his leadership, Artemide grew into a global force, earning him the prestigious Compasso d'Oro twice: first for Career Achievement in 1994, and again for Lifetime Achievement in 2018.
Gismondi was also recognised as Cavaliere del Lavoro by the President of the Italian Republic in 2008 — one of Italy's highest honours for contributions to industry. Throughout his career, he championed the idea that design is not decoration, but a strategic and cultural force.
His legacy lives on in every Artemide collection — lighting born from the intersection of engineering, art, and an enduring belief in the power of good design.
