Giancarlo Mattioli
Giancarlo Mattioli (1933–2018) was an Italian designer, architect, and urban planner whose work bridged creativity, civic responsibility, and modern design. A graduate of architecture from Florence, Mattioli founded the Urban Architects Group “Città Nuova” in 1961, championing collaborative and community-focused design. In 1965, he and the group won the “Studio Artemide Domus di Milano” competition with the now-iconic Nesso lamp—an innovative lighting object inspired by the form of a jellyfish, still featured in MoMA’s permanent collection. Beyond product design, Mattioli played a pivotal role in shaping Bologna’s urban landscape through decades of public service, contributing to major city planning initiatives with a deep sense of civic purpose and intellectual rigour.
